Although he never figured out how to get his flying machines off the ground, Leonardo designed landing gear for them. Leonardo described the hooks at the base of the ladders as "toes" that would keep the machine stable when it hit the ground. Leonardo's landing gear could also be used by passengers to embark and disembark from the flying machine.
